A Job Well Done: Hundreds Attend “Get Surrey Working” Hiring Fair Sept 28, 2017!

The Get Surrey Working Hiring Fair, a collaboration of five WorkBC Centres and the City of Surrey, returned on September 28, 2017 as part of Disability Employment Month.

More than 580 people attended and got the chance to connect with over 54 employers. At least 40 individuals were hired on the spot!

All the employers at Get Surrey Working were committed to inclusive hiring practices. Further, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters were onsite to provide support to the deaf and hard of hearing. An interpreter’s comment illustrated how important it is to make accessibility a priority:

… a young lady I was providing services for stated that having an interpreter there was a huge benefit to her, and that she would not have been able to navigate all the different booths as successfully had interpreters not been made available to her.

In addition to the event being user-friendly, it was remarkably organized. By and large, employers, attendees and WorkBC managers noted how well the event was coordinated and arranged. Details such as being able to contact and connect with many employers, having inquiries handled, and the overall ease of flow at the event were a few of the responses.

I enjoyed the ease of finding jobs in one place rather than hunting and driving all over.

Another attendee remarked that the most beneficial part of the hiring fair was the supportive atmosphere.

The entire event was very encouraging and gave us tremendous opportunity to meet and communicate with potential employers, who were talkative and very helpful.

We thank all the volunteers and employers who participated in this year’s Get Surrey Working Hiring Fair, as well as the five WorkBC Centres and City of Surrey for organizing such a successful event.
